Walter Broadway Obituary

On the morning of Tuesday, September 2, 2025, surrounded by family, Walter Legrand Broadway peacefully transitioned to his heavenly home. He was born on August 16, 1951, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Walter B. Broadway.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his mother-in-law, Mrs. Constance  Abney Allen, and a sister-in-law, Ms. Dawn Allen.

Walter attended Penn Grove High School in New Jersey.  Affectionately known as “Walt “ or “Broadway”, he became a skilled furniture maker and had a long career in the furniture industry.  He worked at Burlington Industries and dedicated over 25 years of service at Thomasville Furniture Industries (TFI) before his retirement.  His career allowed him to meet the love of his life, Charita Allen.  After a 9-year courtship, they were joined in holy matrimony for 36 years.  From their union was born a son, Nicholas J. Broadway (Precious).

After retirement, Walter worked for Presbyterian Church of Jamestown, NC for 10 years until his health declined.  Walt had a servant’s heart, regularly helping neighbors and friends.  He and his friend group known as “The Brothers” raised money, cut grass, and ran errands for seniors in the community.  In his free time, you could catch Walt enjoying a playlist of his favorite songs and spending time outside.  When celebrating with family and friends, Walt was known for his signature dance move, the typewriter.

In addition to his loving wife and youngest son, those left to cherish his memory are his children, Walter Broadway, Jr. of New Jersey, Katisha Cobb of High Point, NC, Tori (Pat) Broaden of Charlotte, NC, and Kendrick (Marshe) Allen of Thomasville, NC;  a brother,  Lee (Ann) Broadway of Thomasville, NC; a sister, Carolyn Broadway of High Point, NC; a father-in-law, William L. Allen of High Point, NC; five brothers-in-law, Keith Allen, Kevin Allen, William C. Allen, Michael (Valerie) Allen, and Stephen (Elaine) Allen, all of High Point. NC; two sisters-in-law, Sharon (James) Green and Stephanie Allen;  seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a special friend, Freeman Sanders; and a host of cousins, other relatives, and loved ones.

A Memorial service is scheduled for Monday, September 8, 2025, at the Chapel of Johnson and Sons, 206 Fourth Street, High Point, NC.  The service will begin at 2:00 p.m.
