Rita Peterson Obituary

On September 9, 2024, God saw fit to call our beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother, wife, auntie, sister, cousin, and greatest friend, Rita Peterson from labor to rest.

Rita Mae Peterson was the youngest of ten children to the now late, Chester Walker and Rita Mae Walker.  She was born on July 8, 1955, in Brooklyn, New York where she grew up and attended Clara Barton High School.  Later she met the love of her life, Troy Peterson Sr., and they finally got married in 1975.  They began to grow a family together and reared seven children.  In the early years of raising her children, she enjoyed working, cooking, playing cards, and most importantly she loved spending time with her family.  Rita decided to leave Brooklyn in 1989 and moved to High Point, North Carolina to pursue a career in the nursing field.  As a CNA , she took care of the elderly.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Sylvia Walker, Vivian Campbell, Joyce Walker, Diana Nathaniel, and Minnie Moore; brothers, Frank “Sonny” Walker, and Kenneth “Mickey” Walker; brothers-in-law, Timothy Peterson and Leon Peterson; nieces, Nadine Nathaniel, Roselyn Moore, Diana Nathaniel, and Kathleen Nathaniel; grandson, Malik Peterson and nephew, Kaleef Johnson.

Rita leaves to cherish fond memories: her husband, Troy Peterson, Sr.; seven children, daughter, Matima Peterson; sons, Troy Peterson, Jr. (Katrilla), Darnell Peterson, Dewayne Peterson (Danielle), Shahid Peterson, Malcom Peterson (Toya), Shaquielle Peterson (Quan); twenty-eight grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren; sisters, Oliva Walker and Brenda Johnson; brother-in-law Gary Peterson (Claudie); sisters-in-law, Maria and Joann Peterson; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends whom she love dearly.

A Funeral Service Celebrating her Life will take place at 3:30pm, Saturday, September 21, 2024 at New Bethel Baptist Church, 1116 Montlieu Ave., High Point.  The family will receive visitiors and friends from 3 to 3:30pm at the church.
