Philip Bruce Morgan (Phil) was born on Hancock Street in Brooklyn, NY, on September 5, 1949. He was the first-born son of the late Mary Norris Morgan and William Oscar Morgan. His younger brother, William Oscar Morgan, Jr., was born three years later.
Phil lived a happy childhood and attended elementary school in Brooklyn until his family moved to Hollis, Queens, NY in 1959. That summer, he met his best friend and future wife, Winnie Robinson-Morgan, who lived on the next block. He was a good student and attended middle and high school and Queensborough Community College in Bayside, Queens. After completing two years of college, he was drafted into the Army to serve in the Vietnam War in 1969.
He served from 1969 to 1972 as a radio repair specialist in Saigon. Phil received an honorable discharge and was awarded several medals, including the National Defense Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal with 60 devices, and the Sharpshooter Badge for the M-16 rifle. After returning home, he continued his service as a member of the U.S. Army Reserves in Fort Knox, Kentucky, until 1975.
Philip's training as a radio electrician in the army, along with his childhood interest in radio technology, proved beneficial after his discharge when he began an apprenticeship program with Xerox Corporation. He worked at the imaging company for 33 years and retired in 2005 as a Master Technician, earning numerous awards for technical skill, attendance, and customer service throughout his career.
Phil married his first love, Winnie Robinson, in 2006 at the Christian Parish for Spiritual Renewal in Harlem, N.Y. After retiring, Winnie and Phil moved to High Point, North Carolina, where he spent many joyful years in their home. Phil often said, “I have never been happier or felt more at peace.” Phil was a member in good standing at Zion Hill UMC since 2017 and served as a member of the United Methodist Men. His love for his church and Pastor led him to serve the congregation in any capacity he was needed.
In addition to his parents, Phil was preceded in death by his younger brother, numerous cousins, and dear childhood friends.
Phil has three children from a previous marriage. Jetaun Morgan Crocker, Lance Morgan, and Philip Payne (Morgan). Between them, he was blessed with twelve grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He is also survived by many cousins and friends, who will miss him dearly. He had one stepdaughter, Ayesha Bethea, and her husband, Kwami, their three children, Alanah, A’nya, and Kwami Bethea, Jr., and great goddaughter, Trenayh Nikkita Dukaron. Philly’s most precious survivor, who he will always cherish, is his other bestie, Hartley Capri Stewart, his goddaughter. In High Point and the world, a plethora of loving children, good friends, and neighbors will miss him.
