Owen "Buddy" Murkey Obituary

Mr. Owen Murkey, Sr., affectionately known as "Buddy" to many, was born on July 4, 1944, to the late Al Murkey and Sallie Ingram Murkey in Webster County, GA.

In addition to his parents, "Buddy" was preceded in death by a daughter, Lachanda Murkey; son, Richard Murkey; grandson, Shawn Murkey; granddaughter, Aleeah Murkey; four sisters, Lizzie Mae Murkey, Mozelle Murkey, Emma Fisher, and Sister; four brothers, Willie Frank Murkey, Moses S. Murkey, T.J. Murkey, and Henry Lee Murkey.

"Buddy" graduated from Crooms Academy in Florida. In 1964, he, along with others, one named Arthur. He found work at Spanner Plastics, where he made pool tables and toys. Later in his career, Buddy further pursued his education and attended Allentown Academy in Pennsylvania, where he earned his certificate as a truck driver. Throughout 35 years of work, he was recognized with the SAFE Drivers Awards along the way.

"Buddy" was a husband, devoted father, grandfather, great-grandfather, beloved brother, caring uncle, and loyal friend. His presence brought warmth and joy to all who knew him.

In 1989, “Buddy” married the love of his life, Elizabeth Wallace. Together, they welcomed seven children into their family of many many years. Buddy soon became a member of the Church of God and devoted his life to living for God, demonstrating a strong commitment to his faith.

"Buddy" relocated to North Carolina, he would often travel up north and as far south as sunny Florida to reconnect with family and friends.  He was a pillar of strength and grace. Everyone loved to see him smile and to have him around. Although his visits may have been short, he always left behind a sense of love, and kindness.

“Buddy” retired in 2020 only to begin working again in 2021. However, his return to work was shortened by his battle with cancer, which he faced with unwavering strength. Despite the challenges, he continues to be a source of support for those around him. Uncle Buddy demonstrated resilience and love for his family and determination to embrace life fully. Buddy had a profound and meaningful bond with each of his brothers, often spending time together creating memories that deepened their relationship.

Owen “Buddy” Murkey is survived by his loving wife, Elizabeth Wallace Murkey; two daughters, Veronica Murkey and Darlene Murkey; three sons, Owen Murkey, Jr., Curtis Murkey, and Derrick Murkey; a close son-in-law, Dwayne Pencile; 30 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; one brother, Pastor Al (Bertha) Murkey; and his best friends, Ronald, Arthur, and Paul. He also leaves behind a host of other relatives and friends who will cherish his memory.

The family of Mr. Owen Murkey will receive visitors and friends at the Chapel of Johnson and Sons Funeral Home, 206 Fourth Street, High Point, NC, on Wednesday, August 13, 2025, at 1 o'clock. Interment will take place on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, at Elmwood Cemetery, New Jersey.
