Obituary

Mary Ann Brown Motley entered Heaven on Saturday, May 14, 2022. She was born in Guilford County, North Carolina to Joe Aaron Brown, Sr. and Alemada Smith.  She received her General Educational Diploma from Rockingham Community College. She married her former husband, the late Will Arthur Motley and three sons were born to this union Arthur Lee, Robin Terrell, and Michael Vincent.  During Mary Ann’s lifetime she lived in Greensboro, North Carolina, Baltimore, Maryland, but made Pelham, North Carolina her permanent residence.

Mary Ann was never a stranger to hard work. She was employed in the textile industry working at Fieldcrest, Macfield, Inc., and Unifi Inc. as an Equipment Operator. She also worked in the hospitality industry cleaning motel rooms while going to school. She volunteered her services at Pelham grade school including driving the school bus. To help support her family Mary Ann worked in the agriculture and long term care industries, and also did various odd jobs.

She cared more about her family than her own well-being while dealing with serious medical issues. When her health began to decline she moved to various rest homes and long term care facilities. Her final years were spent at Pelican Health in Reidsville where she lived the rest of her life in peace. During her stay at Pelican, she made friends with other residents and staff; often sharing whatever she could with others including clothing, food, and puzzle books.  Doing puzzle books was a favorite past time and she enjoyed playing board games with family and friends. Mary Ann also enjoyed having a good meal with people she cared about but mostly, she valued spending time with loved ones.

Mary Ann was a doting grandmother who helped raised her beloved grandchildren. She had a sweet, soft-spoken nature unless you crossed her. During those times you would witness her head-strong, determined nature.  Her faith in God was unwavering throughout her life and she was always thinking of others first. It greatly pleased her when family and friends doted on her.  Rarely a day went by where she wouldn’t have a smile on her face or a kind word said to family and friends.

Mary Ann was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Joe Brown, Jr., Kendall Brown and Keith Brown; and former husband Will Arthur Motley.

She leaves to cherish her memories her only children, three sons: Arthur Lee Motley (Perci) of Charlotte, NC; Robin Terrell Motley of Pelham, NC; and Michael Vincent Motley (Katina) of Ruffin, NC; three grandchildren: Alecia Nicole Motley of Reidsville, NC; Ebony LaShay Motley of Reidsville, NC; and Mataya LaTrice Motley of Ruffin, NC; and other relatives and friends.
