Lutoria Bert Alston 88 was born August 29, 1933, to the now late William Henry and Pattie Thorne Burt in Halifax County, NC and transitioned peacefully on Tuesday, November 16, 2021, in her home surrounded by family. The eighth of fourteen children, Lutoria was preceded in death by seven siblings; Ellen Brinkley, William, Elijah, Thomas, Walter, George, and Mary Whitaker.
At the age of 10, Lutoria joined Zion Hill Baptist Church where she was baptized in 1943. On July 3, 1953, she joined her husband, Willie M. Alston in holy matrimony. She later became a member of Saint Luke Baptist Church where she served as a missionary and deaconess, as well as on other various committees.
Lutoria received her education at the Airlie School and John R. Hawkins High School in Warrenton, NC where she graduated in 1952.
Lutoria was employed with Halifax County Schools as a cafeteria worker, substitute teacher, and a bus driver where she adopted the name “Ms. Toe” from the students. She was a cook around different businesses in the community. She also worked in several homes including Melody Thomas Scott (Nicki) of The Young & the Restless. She retired from lead cook at Halifax Regional Medical Center.
Lutoria enjoyed traveling with the Senior Citizens groups from Littleton and Roanoke Rapids. She was an avid listener of gospel music performers including Frank Williams, Lee Williams, The Williams Brothers, and local artists, The Carolina Stars, Richard Brown, and others. She cherished her grands and great grands and welcomed her second great-great grand into the world just six days before her transition. Everyone who met her, from caregivers to strangers fell in love with her. She was such a beautiful soul!
