Lessie Scott Obituary

A Glance of Glamour

Mother Lessie Scott departed this life on September 25, 2025, at the Meridian Center in High Point, NC. Lessie was born to Catherine Gamble Scott & Drayton Scott on November 6, 1936, in Kingstree, SC. In 1956, she graduated from Palmetto High School in Mullins, SC, and in 1958, moved to Florence, SC. Lessie lived a private but full life. She was known to be a person who didn’t have a problem with speaking her mind, all while being a loving, caring, and giving person who made herself available to help others. She was one who loved adventures, shopping, children, and never minded driving.

In the early 1960’s Lessie moved up north to New York City.  She was a fashionable and glamorous lady who was always into fashion and design. She loved living in the big city. It was so fulfilling because there was always something to do. During her time in NYC, she worked at Revue Fabrics. The company eventually moved to High Point, NC, where she retired in 1991.

Lessie was a born-again, baptized believer. In her early years, she was a member of the Effingham Missionary Baptist Church in Mullins, SC, where she was a choir member and led the song “You Can’t Hurry God”, which was often requested for her to sing in the area's churches and even on the radio broadcast. She also attended Progressive Church in Manhattan, NY, and for the last 30+ years, she was a member and attended the Friendship Missionary Baptist Church, High Point, NC, under the leadership of the Late Rev. J.W. Flake, where she served faithfully until her health began to decline. Over the years, she was an usher, choir member, missionary, Sunday School student, and eventually recognized as one of the Mothers of the church by the current pastor, Bishop Reginald Kellam.

Although she never had children of her own, she spent a lot of time with a special nephew, Shomari Bullard, who would always be her passenger seat rider to the flea markets, yard sales, and on road trips home to Mullins, SC. Eventually, the tables would turn years later when she would become his passenger seat rider as they made their adventures around town to the different thrift stores, yard sales, flea markets, and grocery stores. In 2003, she started working with the “Foster Grandparent Program” through Senior Resources of Guilford and worked with them for 17 years. The children would fondly call her “Grandma”!

Lessie was preceded in death by her father & mother. Bonus mothers, Lela Robinson, Scott & Eloise Gamble Scott. Siblings, Luda Mae Henderson, Lula Wilder, Trudy Mae Jacobs, Ola Mae Williamson, and Rosa Lee Scott. She leaves to cherish her memory her brothers, Joe (*Ann) Scott of Wilmington, DE, Eddie (Mildred) Scott of Charlotte, NC, her sisters, Ruth (*James) Tisdale of Rochester, NY, and Norma Jean (*Charles) Bullard of High Point, NC. Best friend Valeria Smith and a host of nieces, nephews, family, and friends.
