Mr. Lawrence Graves, born December 27, 1928, transitioned to his Heavenly home on Valentine’s Day, February 14, 2020, surrounded by loving family members, at his residence.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary K. Graves; son, Larry J. Graves; and brother, James O. Graves.
L.G., as he was affectionately known by many, was born and raised in High Point and was a proud graduate of William Penn High School. He went on to serve in the Army during the Korean War and later attended, what is now, NCA&T.
Mr. Graves began a career as a Police Officer with the High Point City Police Department where he was employed for over 20 years (1952 – 1972) and achieved rank of Sergeant in the Detective Division. He also served as an Administrative Assistant in the Guilford District Attorney’s Office. He started a small business, Security Consultants of NC, working with our High Point Furniture Markets, employing janitorial staff and later janitorial and security services. He retired as Chief of Police from Piedmont Triad International Airport. For many years, he was a Board Member of Habitat for Humanity, the High Point Housing Authority, High Point’s Chamber of Commerce and the Salvation Army.
Surviving relatives include two loving daughters, Wanda G. Meekins and Juanita Cooper (Billy Ray); grandchildren, Dwayne Meekins (Kisha), Rashawn Cooper, Brandie Cooper, L. Jamal Graves, and Brandon Cooper; great-grandchildren, Maxwell Meekins, Mason Meekins, Arianna Cooper, Braydon Cooper and Taylyn Graves, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be conducted at 12 noon on Friday, February 21, 2020 at Word of Life Tabernacle, 1801 Deep River Rd. The family will receive visitors from 11 to 12 noon at the church on Friday. Burial will follow at Guilford Memorial Park.
