Joseph Dennis Morehead was born on January 18, 1925 to George Hoston Morehead and Mattie Pearl Saunders Morehead in Greensboro, North Carolina. Joseph, known to most as Joe, was one of fifteen children created by this union. His siblings included Viola, Fuller, Henry, Ada, Mitchel, Margaret, Marie, Hattie, Allen, Pearl, Francis, Mammie, Georganna, and Virganna.
Joe knew the meaning of hard work. From an early age, he worked on his family farm in Greensboro. Joseph held multiple jobs in his community over the years. He was a valuable employee at Leader Broom Work at Guilford College, Pamona Terra Carter Pipe Company, Burlington Industries, and Ellison Paper Company, from which he retired after injury. He also did maintenance work in various locations. Joe purchased land and a home in western Guilford County where he operated his own farm. He primarily raised tobacco and hogs but also produced corn and other produce crops.
Joe was a life-long member of Persimmon Grove African Methodist Episcopal Church. In the church, he was an active member. Over the years, Joe served as a youth choir member, usher, and other roles. He was recently honored as ‘Man of the Year’. As the eldest member, held the distinct title of ‘Father of the Church’ upon his passing.
Joe found the love of his life and was married to Clara Kathleen Lindsay in 1946. From this blessed union, their son, Joseph ‘Donnie’ Morehead was born. Joe was a loving husband, father and provider. He loved working outdoors, hunting, spending time with family, and socializing. Joe never met a stranger. As an older adult, spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren gave him great joy.
Joe transitioned peacefully from this earth to his heavenly home on the morning of Saturday, January 8, 2022 at Hospice Home of the Piedmont in High Point, North Carolina. He was preceded in death by his mother, father, fourteen siblings, wife, and daughter-in-law, Wanda Morehead.
Surviving relatives include son, Donnie Morehead; three grandchildren, Joey Morehead (Amber), Terri Sharpe (Kenny), and Jerri Shepard (James); six great grandchildren, Jaize, Elly, Bryce, Lindsay, Sterling, and Janae; special niece, Shirley Morehead Simmons; special family members, Tonya Traynham, Ashlee Butler, and Calvin; and a plethora of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Persimmon Grove African Methodist Episcopal Church, 403 Dolley Madison Road, Greensboro, NC, on Thursday, January 13, 2022 at 1:00pm. Entombment will follow at Guilford Memorial Park. Public viewing at the funeral home will be from 1 to 7p.m. on Wednesday, January 12th.
