Joseph Waymond Holland

Joseph Waymond Holland was born August 3,1944. in High Point, NC. Early Friday morning, March 24, 2023, our beloved transcended from this earthly life to life everlasting.  He was surrounded by his loving wife, five children, brother, grandson, and nephew. Joe lived in Trinity and Charlotte, NC most of his life. He was the son of Daniel Holland and Una Mary Evans Holland Quick, who have preceded him in death. He married Evelyn Dixie Holland in 1962. They were married 18 years and together they had five beautiful children: Wayne, Dale, Michelle, Alagra and India. He was raised in a devoted Christian church-going family as a member of Bethel Glenola United Methodist Church. Joe raised his family at the same church where they all became dedicated members of the church choir. He was also a member of the Men’s Brotherhood. Joe lived in Charlotte for 13 years married to Mattie Floyd. In 2007, he remarried and settled in Eight Mile, Alabama with his current wife, Margaret. He was a graduate of William Penn High School. He worked at Hillsville Lumber Company and Silvernet Hosiery Mill before obtaining his Class A CDL license.  Thereafter, he became a truck driver at High Point Products and worked there for 13 years. He drove for Wilson Trucking for 40 years before retiring.

 Joe was raised in a close-knit family of 5 brothers and 4 sisters. His special relationship with his brother, Tony always gave him strength, love and laughter. Joe was number 7. Everyone knew their number and their rank. This was always a point of laughter and fun at family gatherings—among his brothers and sisters …being called by your number vs. your name. Joe was preceded in death by his 3 brothers, Charlie, Leo, Cornelius, and 3 sisters, Mary Eleanora, Susie, and Willie Mae.

As an expert equestrian (horse trainer), Joe followed his passion for horses from childhood. His love for horses only strengthened over time and his family considered him a horse “whisperer”. He bred, owned, and showed hundreds of horses in his career as a professional equestrian. He spent endless hours training, riding, and showing horses – even teaching his children and grandchildren to ride. Over the course of seven decades of riding, Joe racked up numerous trophies and prizes. He competed in local and regional horse shows, charity functions, parades, state and world fairs. He also served as a respected horse show judge awarding prizes to the next generation. For Joe, horses were more than just a hobby. He had a special relationship with all the horses he owned and connected with them on a spiritual level. Raising her from birth, Joe considered China Doll (his paint horse) a part of the family. Foxy was also a favorite. Joe also enjoyed fishing with his grandson, Bralynn. 

Joe was a Lifetime member of the National 9th & 10th Horse Calvary Association, then a member of the Buffalo Soldier Greater North Carolina Chapter, the Greater Mobile Chapter #41 and a member of the Port City Riders in Mobile, Alabama. These two organizations gave Joe great pride, fellowship and lifelong friendships. He always spoke about these organizations with pride and a smile. The Buffalo Soldiers were one of the biggest highlights of his life. The friendships he made meant a great deal to him.  Joe meant a great deal to the Buffalo Soldiers.  “We can. We will.”     

Joe’s family and friends were his greatest treasures. He was incredibly proud of his children and grandchildren. He often said, “when it’s all said and done…all you have is FAMILY… Don’t ever forget that!” He was survived by his wife Margaret Holland and 4 step-children; his children; Wayne Holland (Amy) of Randleman, NC, Dale Holland (Shawanna) of Jamestown, NC, Michelle Holland of Charlotte, NC, Alagra Holland-Morris of Nashville, TN and India Holland-Stewart (Toney) of Greensboro, NC, his 15 grand-children, Brandon, Bryant, Bradley, Jasmine, Racheal, LaToya, Sarah, Cierra, Amir, Rodney, Alaya, Bralynn, Elisia, and Aryalyn, and 13 great grandchildren; two brothers, one sister, and numerous nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends. Joe will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

A Celebration of Life will take place on Saturday, April 8, 2023 at Bethel United Methodist Church, 3229 Old Glenola Road, Archdale, NC.  The family will receive visitors and friends from 11 to 12 noon at the church, with the service beginning at 12 noon.
