John Henry Carter was born on June 2, 1936, to the late Dennis Harry and Mary Jane Whitsett Carter in Guilford County, NC. He was the sixth of ten children. On Sunday, March 30, 2025, at Jacobs Creek Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, he answered God’s call to go home.
John Henry, also known as Johnny or Uncle Johnny, attended Laughlin High School in Summerfield, NC. He later worked at Sears Roebuck & Company for many years before retiring from Estes Trucking Co.
Johnny married Olivia Johnson Carter, and they were blessed together for 52 years with a daughter named Angela Nicole.
At an early age, he joined St Thomas Chapel and sang with the Jolly Five, a gospel group that ministered in the community, which included Mr. Herman and others. He had a deep love for his church, his church family, and his pastor. Throughout the years, he served in various roles until health issues arose. He was a dedicated deacon, a senior choir member, the President of the Usher Board, and a member of the male chorus and the Lawn Committee.
He served as the church custodian with his wife for many years. They served unconditionally and with pride, sometimes making 2 to 3 trips daily from Reidsville to Summerfield, always available when needed.
John Henry was preceded in death by his parents, his loving wife, Olivia Johnson Carter; three brothers, Abraham L. Carter, George William Carter, and Dennis Melvin Carter; four sisters, Nina M. Graves, Janet L. Womack, Helen L. Parker, and Maxine Mensah.
He leaves to cherish his memories his daughter, Angela Nicole Carter (Chris); one brother, Linwood Carter (Mildred); one sister, Marie Cumings (Sylvester); his devoted niece, Doris Young; sister-in-law, Emily Pemberton; godchildren, Ramondo Jessup and Emore Mims; and dear friends, Wallace Enoch and Josh Leach along with a host of other nieces, nephews, family members and friends.
John Henry loved and trusted God in every aspect of his life. Everyone who met him knew he loved the Lord. He was a dedicated prayer warrior and was never ashamed of it. John showed kindness and love to everyone he met, and his greatest desire was for everyone to know the Lord and the power of prayer.
