James Edward Lawson peacefully passed away, surrounded by family, on Friday November 22, 2024. He was born in Reidsville, NC on January 13, 1951. James graduated from Booker T. Washington High School.
He attended Macedonia Holiness Church Greensboro NC under the leadership of Bishop Lloyd Gibson where he preached his initial sermon.
In his leisure time, he loved to play basketball. He was and will forever be known by many as “Sandlot”, the nickname he acquired because of his outstanding skill on the sandlot. He attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill on a basketball scholarship. James also had a love for drawing. In the late 1960’s he would receive a small outline of an object from Bob Ross (American painter and art instructor) once a month via mail and from that tiny object create a masterpiece. After he finished each drawing James would return the artwork to Mr. Ross for grading. In his older age, he enjoyed sitting in his chair, watching TV, listening to sermons, and reading his bible, study guides and Christian literature.
James was preceded in death by his parents, Elwood and Willie Joe Lawson and his brother Michael Lawson.
Surviving relatives include his two daughters, whom he loved and cherished Jamie Lawson and Dinetta Richardson (Torris); two grandchildren, Alex Richardson and Joshua Richardson; Stepchildren, Ken Nobel and Timothy Nobel; Siblings, Wyvonne Dickerson, Edna Parson of Reidsville NC; Shenna Harrison (Allen) Gibsonville NC; Gwenda Whitt (Vincent) Greensboro NC; Ronald Lawson (Shelia) Raeford NC; Caregiver and friend, Charlene Woodson; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
