Herbert Lee Johnson was born October 15, 1937 in Cheraw South Carolina in Marlboro County to Helena Johnson Williams and OC McManus. He transitioned to his heavenly home on Tuesday evening, April 28, 2020. Herbert was lovingly known as “Big Time” by many who loved him. Growing up he attended Wallace Elementary school in South Carolina. Always a hard worker, he worked in the tobacco fields and drove tractor trailers. He later relocated to High Point with his first cousin and best friend, Mary Alice Morrison. He lived with her most of his life. A handyman, he loved working on lawn mowers, as well as fixing and building things around the house. He was always doing or saying something funny to make us laugh. A loving and compassionate person, there was never a dull moment in his presence. He attended Emmanuel Enrichment Center, which he called his school and a member of Christ Church of Deliverance where he was fondly called “Pop”. He leaves a void in our hearts, a hush in our spirits and loving memories that will keep us laughing for a life time.
Herbert was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Helena Johnson Williams and OC McManus; his siblings, Hattie Bell Lee, Helen Williams, Cora Leggett, Carl Williams, Pappy and Robert McManus; and a special aunt, Elosie McManus Baskin.
Although, Herbert didn’t have any biological children of his own, he was like a father figure to Roger Moore (Mary), Donnie Moore, Danny Baskin, Jerome Moore (Tosha), Rodney Moore, Denise Smith-Reed (Larry) and Elder Melodie Smith-Golden (Eugene); a special niece, Tynashia Nezel Smith-Upchurch and nephew, Micheal Nezel Smith who were reared in the home; a special cousins, Sarah Fuller Baskin and Linda Fuller; nephew, Lorenzo Fuller who always looked after Herbert. He was a brother, uncle, cousin, and nephew; but most of all, he was a friend.
A private Memorial Service will be given on Sunday, May 3rd, at Christ Church of Deliverance, 105 Hoskins St., High Point, NC 27262
