Gilbert Carter Obituary

Gilbert Joseph Carter was taken by the Lord on Friday, June 27, 2025.  He was born and raised in High Point, NC, on July 31, 1930, to the late Darrow Clayton Carter and Lessie Amelia Crutchfield.

He was one of thirteen illustrious brothers and sisters: Delma, David, Sarah Francis, Nettie Mae, Juliette, Robert, Doris, Alice, Winifred, Martin “Herbert,” and Gilbert (his identical twin), as well as Daniel and Paul. They were all teachers, ministers, clergy, college professors, builders, businessmen, and businesswomen who worked hard to strengthen themselves, their families, and their communities.

After graduating from William Penn High School, he attended North Carolina A&T State University. He enlisted in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. His service was marked by a strong sense of commitment and integrity. After years of dedicated service, he was honorably discharged, leaving behind a legacy of courage and loyalty.

During a visit to his alma mater, William Penn, while on leave, he met his future wife, Elaine Clark. From that union, six children were born: Mary (Phillip), Joseph, Phillip, who died in 1974, Robert, Margaret Ann (Rudy), and Martin.

He had a passion for brick masonry and worked on numerous projects, both large and small. He was employed with Evansville Veneer and Lumber Company and retired from Ama Desk as a line supervisor.

As teenagers in high school, he and his twin brother were walking by a new church being built on Kivett Drive when they asked the workers if they needed help. They did, and they eagerly joined the construction crew. They both joined the church and became catholic. His twin brother, Herbert, became Brother Martin and later became a priest, Father Martin, in the Society of the Atonement Franciscans.

Gilbert was married with six children, all of whom were baptized and blessed at Christ the King Church. Although there were difficult times, we bore our crosses and carried on. Dad wanted to help people, and he helped as many as he could. He was a beloved uncle, affectionately known as “Gib.”

One of his strengths was his unwavering loyalty and faithfulness. He lived a long and strong life, always taking care of and giving to his nieces and nephews and anyone he could. He will be missed greatly. In accordance with his wishes, he was to be laid to rest beside his son, Phillip, who passed away at the age of thirteen due to heart failure.
