Mrs. Geneva Atkinson Lax, a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother, auntie, and friend, peacefully passed away on Wednesday, December 18, 2024, at her home in High Point, North Carolina. Geneva was born in Clarkton, North Carolina, on February 14, 1930; she was one of ten children born to the late Annie Kemp Atkinson and Lloyd Atkinson.
Geneva was reared on a farm in Bladen County and graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in Clarkton, North Carolina. After high school, she moved to Greensboro, North Carolina, where she attended North Carolina A&T State University. It was there that she met William Lax Jr., who was originally from Washington, D.C. They later married in New York City, and from their union, they had five children: Sandra, Cheryl, Shawn, Renee, and Phyllis.
In 1971, Rev. William Lax, Jr. was assigned as Assistant Pastor to Bishop J.U. Roberts at Mt. Calvary Church in Greensboro, NC. In 1980, he moved his family to High Point, NC, where he was installed as Senior Pastor of Mt. Calvary Holy Church, a position that allowed him to lead with compassion and vision.
From 1980 to 1991, Geneva Lax gracefully stood by her husband's side, fulfilling the role of First Lady of the church and contributing to its growth and fellowship.
In 1998, after years of dedicated work, Geneva made the decision to retire from her position at Gilbarco Inc. in Greensboro, NC. Her retirement marked a new chapter in her life, allowing her to devote more time to the church and her family.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. William Lax, Jr., and her daughter, Phyllis Lax Lawson.
Geneva leaves to cherish her memory: four children, Sandra Wright of Raleigh, NC; Cheryl Lax Hingleton (Garry) of Greensboro, NC; Shawn Lax (Veronica) of Jacksonville, Fl., and Renee Lax of Takoma Park, Md. She will be fondly remembered by her grandchildren, Valerie, Dana, David, Robin and Wackima, Erica, Geneva, Tiffany, Simone, Shawn, Jr., Kayla, and a host of great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
A Celebration of Love will be given on Saturday, December 28, 2024 at Mt. Calvary Holy Church, 2207 E. Green Drive, High Point. The family will receive visitors and friends from 11:30 to 12 noon. The service will start at noon. A burial will follow at Floral Gardens Memorial Park.
