Diana McCollum Obituary

 

Mrs. Diana Young McCollum, 76, of 825 Circle Drive, High Point, NC entered peacefully into eternal rest on Sunday, July 11, 2021 at her residence.

Diana was born on January 24, 1945 in High Point NC to the late Joe Erskine Young and Eula Johnson Young.  She was the oldest of the seven girls and passionately reminded them of it. Diana helped to nourish her siblings and she placed them first before anyone else.

She attended High Point City Schools and played various sports and her favorite of all was softball. Diana was previously married and to that union she birthed Edward Jr. and Keith Bernard.  Later, she met the love of her life Hector Lee McCollum and they were married on May 12, 1965 and to this union was born Carl, Sharon and Cheryl.

Diana’s employment includes Adam Mills Hosiery, Silver Knit, Cone Mills and retired from Guilford County Schools as a Bus Driver in 2005.  She was self-employed and provided cleaning services for several Showrooms. Diana also, provided caterings services to NC A&T State University School of Business.

Mother McCollum was a devoted member of Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church. There she served as a Deaconess, Missionary, member of the Kitchen Committee member of Choir No. 1.  She was appointed as Church Mother on December 3, 2017. 

“Flossie” was the life of the party. She loved to read romance-suspense novels and to watch old westerns shows.  She was a great cook and enjoyed laughing and spending time with her family. 

She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Ms. Eartha Carleen Young; father and mother-in-law, Mr. Odell and Mrs. Odessa McCallum; a bonus son, Mr. Kenneth Reaves; a best friend, Apostle Addie Collins.

Those left to cherish her memories are her husband;  her sons, Edward “Junebug” Torrence, Jr., Keith Torrence, Carl Torrence (Penny), Kent Tart (Glenda), Terry Reaves (Mavis), Matthew Covington (Tammy), and Frankie Baker; her daughters, Cassandra Gillespie (Douglas Jr.), Sharon  Leach (Ronald), Cheryl McCoy (Brent) andJanice Shields (Robert); her sisters, Celeste Young (Robert), Deborah Clinard (Roger), Lorrie Williams, Katherine “Chi” Young and Renea Young; one brother, Charles Jenkins (Connie); (18) grandchildren; (22) great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, Odell McCallum Jr.; sisters-in-laws, Louvenia Graham and Ossie Clemons.; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. Her best friends, Rev. Joann Stanback, Rev. Betty Adams, Ms. Rosa Lee Brown and sister-cousin Ms. Marie Fleming.

A Celebration of Life will be given at 12:30 on Friday, July 16th, at Oak Grove Baptist Church, 1710 E. Green Drive, High Point. The family visitation will begin at 12 noon at the church.  Burial will follow at Carolina Biblical Gardens, Jamestown., NC. Public viewing at the funeral home will be on Thursday from 12 to 7 pm.
