Chester Hayes

Chester Hayes departed this earthly life on Friday, July 19, 2024 at his residence.  He was born on April 12, 1932 in Dillion, South Carolina to the late Hamer and Pearl McLeod Hayes.  He attended Marlboro County Public School system. He served honorable in the United States Army. After serving in the Army, he later retired from Hendrix Batting Company. He was a member of Gethsemane Baptist Church where he served as a member of the Men’s Choir playing guitar. He enjoyed working in his garden, riding his bike, singing, playing his guitar and shooting pool. He loved watching Wheel of Fortune and the Atlanta Braves. Many people knew Chester as “Shake”.

On January 31,1955 he married Ruth Hazel Ford, the love of his life. Chester and Ruth were married for 69 years.

Chester was preceded in death by daughters Annie Pearl and Denise Hayes (twin of Dora), siblings, James Hayes, Robert Hayes, Marion C. Hayes, Mary Bailey, Preston Hayes, Fredie “Duck” Hayes and Heddie Dawkins.

Chester leaves to cherish loving and precious memories a beloved and devoted wife Ruth, his children, Brenda H. Brand (Carl), Sandra H. McCluney (Eddie), Dora Hayes, Carla H. Reaves (Greg), Chester Hayes Jr., James Hayes, Darlene Gilchrist and Wayne Dimes(Faith), grandchildren, Carlena Brand, Carl Brand Jr., Dexter McCluney (Jareca), Nicole McCluney, Rakeem Carter, Cameron Hayes, Devin Mitchell and Katina Gilchrist, two loving and dedicated sisters, Willie Mae Alsbrooks and Annie Riddick, sister-n-laws, Edna Manning, Bobby Jean Hayes and Ann Hayes. And a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

There will be no public viewing.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, July 28, 2024 @1:00pm at Gethsemane Baptist Church, 401 Wise Street, High Point, NC with Rev. Roy Fitzgerald officiating. The family will receive friends at the church from 12:30pm until 1:00pm. Burial will follow at Carolina Biblical Gardens, Jamestown.
