Mr. James Alexander Dixon, Sr., affectionately known as “Palm Beach,” because of his stylish dress, died peacefully at Meridian Nursing Home in High Point, North Carolina on Sunday, June 18, 2017 at 11:02pm. He was 88 years old. He is preceded in death by his father, Fred Dixon, Sr., his mother, Willette Dorsett Dixon, his sister, Mary Elizabeth Dixon Bailey, brother Fred Dixon, Jr. and his wife, Evelyn White Dixon.

He was born on December 19, 1928 here in High Point. (I think there must have been something special about this month, because all of Mom’s men in this family were born in December.)  He attended high school at William Penn and college at North Carolina A&T State University. He served in the United States Air Force and was a veteran of the Korean War. He later attended Guilford Technical Community College to obtain certificates in Culinary Arts and Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA).

James was devoted to his wife Evelyn White Dixon for over 30 years. In fact he became a CNA for the sole purpose of caring for mom until her death in 1999. Our dad was a successful entrepreneur and owned a Janitorial Service. He also worked in the hotel industry as a Bellman. He was known for his dedication to healthful living and his family. He served as a father figure to many. His children and grandchildren will remember him as a kind, gentle, and patient father who encouraged them to pursue their goals. James was well known for being a healthy individual who could be seen jogging and walking through out High Point well into his mid 70’s. He remains an inspiration to many and a model, husband and father.

Dad was an accomplished man of Great Faith and a community leader.  He was a generous, witty, dedicated individual who loved to serve others and who was passionate about his “Christian Walk.” Through out his life he was an active member in the High Point community. He has been a member of Greater First United Baptist Church for several years, he previously attended Christ The King Catholic Church, and Memorial United Methodist Church. He was also a civic leader, serving as a member of the High Point City Council.

James has a legacy that remains in those that live on to honor his memory. James is survived by his children Michael Torrence of Atlanta GA, Cheryl and Stephen Torrence of High Point NC, Ilka and Roddy Covington of High Point NC, Diane and James Dixon, Jr. of Tampa FL, Evelyn Renee Dixon of High Point, NC and Christina & Kevin Dixon of San Diego CA.

His 10 Grandchildren include Tiffany Dixon, Sydney Carroll, Natasha Brown, Camryn Torrence, and Amari Wright. Jennifer Brown, Michael Torrence Jr, Antoine Torrence, and Joseph Torrence,
His 8 great grandchildren are Jaylen Patterson, Korey Brown, Paige Torrence, Aaliyah Torrence, Aubrey Torrence, Autumn Torrence, Chosaun Brown,  and Ciana Ratliff.

His close and loving nieces are Freddye Dixon, Sandra Bland, Gloria Bailey Phillips, Pamela, Angela, and Monica Bailey. And nephews Jonathan and Ray Bailey, as well as a host of other relatives loved ones and friends.

The family would like to thank the Meridian Nursing Home staff for their efforts and care in his final days.
